FINAL DESIGN PROJECT - TWO FACED TECHNOLOGY

ARTIST STATEMENT

Every great work of art has two faces, one toward it's own time and one toward its future

-Lester Bangs

People today are becoming more and more attached to their technology. Relationships are being built online or through phones. Keyboards and keypads are becoming the keys to our heart. Many people have argued that social networking sites unleash the two faces in humans.  People normally only portray their ideal image online, they could be perfect online but in reality they might be the total opposite. In my opinion, the two face-ness doesn't stop there. It has actually been derived from the advance technology itself. As the quote implies, the good side of technology is so prominent right now. Give it some years or even decades, that's when the downfall will kick in and hit us real bad.

As for Medicines, they could help many people to stay alive, they could also kill people if they are turned into drugs. Technology, keeps us smart and efficient, just like the brain. However, it could also corrode our hearts and disrupt our health. Technology provides transportation to allow people to travel instantly and conveniently. But the same kind of technology can be used to create atomic bombs to harm other people's life. Technology allows advanced communication to take place where the whole world is connected in a blink of an eye. On the other hand, technology also  allows phishing, hacking, virus and bugs to corrupt our devices. It's true that technology provides us advanced facilities and the beautiful city we live in. But how about the other side of technology that pollutes our environment as more and more factories are being built? Besides, technology also gives us cars in all shapes and sizes to travel around. But what happens when you end up in an accident?

The puzzle combination shows that there's a link between the good and bad. There's always two sides to everything in this world : good or bad, you decide.

THE MAKING OF FINAL PROJECT

TWO FACED TECHNOLOGY - IN THE MAKING

Plenty of hard work , blood, sweat and effort was put into creating the final project. As a psychology student, I had no experience in photo shop before this. Thus, I hope this artwork can meet the expectations and won't disappoint.

Original Sketch

Step 1 : I did a abstract art for the background to make the artwork more original.

Tool used - Brush > Colour > Opacity > Eraser

Step 2 : The abstract art I did was inverted to the opposite colour to create a contrast.

Tools used : Linear light > Opacity

Step 3 : Both layers were duplicated on top of the original sketch layer and multiply was selected.

Tools used : Multiply > Opacity

Step 4 : Once the sketch looked visible, I used the eraser tool to clean the objects and details in the sketch. This is to make the colouring process easier later on.

Tools used: Eraser ( Brush and Block)

Step 5 :  I then proceeded to colour the sketch. Making sure the colour on the right is more vibrant and the colours are dull on the left. Again, to show a contrast between the bad and good side of technology.

Tools used : Brush ( all types)  > Bush Brushes ( downloaded online) >  Opacity

Step 6: Later on, I felt that the icons on my sketch are not outstanding enough. I decided to create my own using photoshop.

Tools used : Rounded Rectangular tool > Elliptical Marquee tool > Polygonal Lasso tool > Lasso tool > Magic Wand tool > Pain Bucket tool

Step 7 : Then, I duplicated all the icon layers on the main layer and adjust the size of the image. The extra white backgrounds were all removed.

Tools used : Polygonal Lasso tool > Lasso tool > Eraser

Step 8 : Spent plenty of time adjusting the opacity for every objects, making the final product more clear, recoloured some items and outlined some of the original sketches. I realized it was too dull and flat looking. Therefore, I proceeded to find textures to add into the artwork to make it look more striking and 3 dimensional.

Tools used : Eraser > Brush > Lasso Tool > Stroke ( Edit) > Opacity

Step 9 : Finally found suitable textures to make the artwork pop. Played around with the opacity to suit the mood of the artwork.

Tools used : Duplicate layers > Eraser > Opacity > Effects

TADAAAAAA! THE END PRODUCT.

FINAL DESIGN SKETCHES

Sketches for the Final Project

Sketch 1 : Communication Barrier

People nowadays tend to communicate a lot through advance technology devices. Anyone could be a extrovert and sound extremely sociable through social networking sites and mobile applications. However, when it comes to real life face to face communication, they might not be able to even look into people's eyes to socialize or mingle around. That, might even be their biggest fear. With that mentioned, it is undeniable that the advance technology today does build up a barrier or a communication wall among  humans.

Sketch 2 : Reliance

People today rely too much on the advance technology. In fact, plenty of us have stated the fact that we can't live without technology. This sketch shows how humans in this era especially teenagers rely on technology ( a tad bit too much) from a daily basis or perspective. Even babies are sucking their milk from a mobile phone. Sleeping with a thousand devices next to us is also one of the normal phenomenon seen today.

 Sketch 3 : World Evolution

This sketch is trying to portray that technology grows along as the earth ages. It has the good old days devices slowly turning into the modern day era's technology gadgets. It shows how far technology has revolutionized. The robot hand grabbing the entire earth just shows how the new tech is slowly conquering the world, slowly shaking away the old devices to the new ones. Welcome to the new era where we will soon have robots walking among us.

Sketch 4 : Technology heartbeat

Today, technology has become the root of human's survival. If there's a survival kit,  all the items below will probably be included. Mobile phones, laptops, earphones, Dj sets and Ipads have all became necessities to human beings today. It allows us to communicate through continents around the world which explains how the countries on the map are shaped into technology gadgets. Also, the Dj sets and earphones was added as it is obvious that music has became a tool to bring humans all around the world together. The heart beat represents the united spirit and soul among human beings everywhere on earth. Hence, this sketch shows the bright side of advance technology.

Final Sketch : Two faced Technology (APPROVED)

Description will be under artist statement in the final posting.

NATIONAL ART GALLERY

On the 8th of June, the design students of HELP University went on a fun trip to the National Art Gallery. The reason why I took so long to came up with this post is because I find it hard to decipher the artwork that really caught my eye.

The only artwork that caught my attention and really got me thinking is Someone Forgotten by Wong Woan Lee (1999) -Painted with oil on canvas.

Growing old is inevitable, and also death. In this revolutionise world, everything can be achieve except immortality. Humans tend to grow old, it involves a lot of pain, lost and reminiscence as memories tend to flash across they eyes of those involve. The main character in the work is the old Chinese man who is shown several times in the painting. The background of the painting is the interior of small cubicle-like spaces representing the different situations. Tonal light was used to show the moods of death and depression which enhance the story behind the artwork. The figure of the old man, shown several times in various positions, implies the use of multiple time frames simultaneously within the art work. The old man is shown sleeping, talking to his grand children, watching television, staring at a wall and lying sick on a mattress.

He can be seen in a pose where he is trying to reach out to his grandchildren in the first frame. His grandchildren looks at him with a pair of avoidance eyes, as if he is someone of distance to them or a monster that they are afraid of. In the second frame, He is shown squatting and holding his head with both his hands, in a pose that can only suggest despair and a personal loneliness that is private and his alone. He is actually staring at his past where he knew one day he would look back at all these memories. He knew upon his dead body, his souls would wonder and travel to the past with regrets and sadness all around. His children standing outside the windows of the room looking at the poor ill old man. This just shows how his children had neglected him all this time. Even when he is about to face death, they stood outside helplessly and shock, not intending to visit him at all. In the third frame, he is in the position where he looks like he is feeling outcast by the other family members.

The discomforting theme reflected in this work is a new realistic approach that address the human condition. It reflects the human nature of ditching the old and embracing the new. Today, it is very common to find old people lying on the streets abandoned by the young ones. It is of the new era where the selfishness of the younger generation prevails, forgetting about their roots and the ones that loved them and gave them their souls.

After looking at the picture, I just realized how much our every kind words and actions mean to the older ones especially my grandparents. I'm one who believes what comes around goes around. We should all really reflect on how we used treat them and perhaps turn over a new leaf. Care for the old, they gave us souls. Love the elderly, make them live happily. Besides, they might not be able to live with us any longer? Tomorrow is a mystery, let's all make sure today won't be a regretted history.

This is me leaving a mark in the National Art Gallery :)

PHOTO MONTAGE

There and back again with LOVE

How far would you go for your loved ones?

These are the few photo montages I poured my heart and soul into creating. I actually got the idea from a valentine's day calender. Thought it would be cute if I crop myself into various places and seasons to show the 'power' of my love. It's like I could travel around the world just to deliver my love and care for my loved ones. Hence, the title: There and back again with love. With that mentioned, I actually took a few photos to make sure my figures are suitable for all of the themes. It actually took me quite some time and effort to produce the above. I finally understand how hard it is to come up with a quality photo montage.

POP ART

DOUBLE STANDARD

The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair. - Two face

As evil as it sounds, we are all forced to wear a mask to survive in this realistic world. It seems like we are all taught to be nice to those that we know might harm us. Why? To avoid dramas and troubles. We are all told to befriend with our enemies. Why? To know your own strength and their weaknesses in order to succeed. We are told to distance ourselves from those that are close to us. Why? Because nobody can be trusted in this world.

FACES OF JOEY

Faces of Joey. It represents how my personality changes during the day and night. People normally call me a chameleon as I adapt to the environment well. I present myself differently in different events and venues. I'm able to communicate with anyone, anywhere and any time.

During the day, I'm usually a nerd aiming to be a high achiever. I try my best in everything I do. I make sure I'm able to succeed in the end as I put in a lot of efforts and handwork into everything I do. I aim high and try to reach for my goals. I make sure I am in control of my grades in order to get scholarship.

When the sun sets, it's either I relax at home by watching my TV series, listening to music or reading a book. More often, I would attend social events. I personally think that social networking in this era plays an important role in our life. I do go to parties and clubs to socialize and expand my network of friends. I do not waste my time getting drunk and wasted. I also like going to rave parties, not because for the sake of being mainstream but that I love the atmosphere and the music. Also, another hobby of mine is to dance as I will have the adrenaline rush whenever I have the freedom to move. Thus, I really enjoy going to these places just to get my minds off things and to release stress.

Despite my different faces, I still manage to juggle my play time and work time. We only live once, study hard and party even harder! Don't worry, I'm a psychology student and I'm pretty sure that I do not have a spilt personality.

ART MOVEMENT

MY KIND OF ART - ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

An art movement is a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time

Canticle, casein on paper by Mark Tobey, 1954
My favourite out of all as it's obvious I really like the galaxy.

Breaking away from accepted conventions in both technique and subject matter, the artists made monumentally scaled works that stood as reflections of their individual psyches—and in doing so, attempted to tap into universal inner sources. These artists valued spontaneity and improvisation, and they accorded the highest importance to process. Their work resists stylistic categorization, but it can be clustered around two basic inclinations: an emphasis on dynamic, energetic gesture, in contrast to a reflective, cerebral focus on more open fields of color. In either case, the imagery was primarily abstract. Even when depicting images based on visual realities, the Abstract Expressionists favored a highly abstracted mode.

Abstract Expressionism a.k.a. Action Painting or Color Field Painting exploded onto the art scene after World War II with its characteristic messiness and extremely energetic applications of paint. To the contemporary audience, the whole enterprise seemed like youthful antagonism--hardly worthy of the name "art."

Abstract Expressionism is also referred to as Gestural Abstraction , because its brush stokes revealed the artist's process. This process is the subject of the art itself.
Although at first glance it seems like a Kindergarten work . However, these artists cultivate the interplay of skill and unplanned occurrences to determine the painting's final outcome.
Mark Tobey (1890-1976) drew his painted marks, as if he were inventing an unintelligible alphabet for an exotic language that no one knew or would ever bother to learn. His work was based on his study of Chinese calligraphy and brush painting, as well as Buddhism.

The key to understanding Abstract Expressionism is to understand the concept of "deep" in 1950s slang. "Deep" meant not decorative, not facile and not insincere. Abstract Expressionists strove to uncover their most personal feelings directly through making art. Also, they are able to achieve some transformation or personal redemption.

How Long Has Abstract Expressionism Been a Movement?
Abstract Expressionism evolved through the work of each individual artist. Generally speaking, each artist arrived at this free-wheeling style by the end of the 1940s and continued in the same manner to the end of his or her life. The style has remained alive well into the current century through its youngest practitioners.

What Are the Key Characteristics of Abstract Expressionism?

·         Unconventional application of paint, usually without a recognizable subject that tends toward amorphous shapes in brilliant colours.

·         Dripping, smearing, slathering, and flinging lots of paint on to the canvas.

·         Sometimes gestural "writing" in a loosely calligraphic manner.

·         In the case of Color Field artists: carefully filling the picture plane with zones of color that create tension between the shapes and hues.

Gestural Abstraction emphasizes the process of making art, often through a variety of techniques that include dripping, dabbing, smearing, and even flinging paint on to the surface of the canvas. These energetic techniques depend on broad actions directed by the artist's sense of control interacting with chance or random occurrences. For this reason, Gestural Abstraction is better known as Action Painting. The artists and the various techniques are associated with the movement Abstract Expressionism and The New York School of the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

DESCRIPTION OF ART

DEPRESSION : LOSING A LOVE ONE

I realized that all my posts are so colourful and cheerful but they really do define me. I'm generally a very happy go lucky person. I don't go around whining about how bad my life is and how horrible my day was. I get over problems and sad happenings really fast, I move on quick, I've never dwell in the past and drown myself in sadness. 'I'm depressed', that's one thing you will never hear me saying. I don't know about you and everyone else, but in my opinion, why clinging on to things that won't make us feel good? We only live once and life is short, shouldn't we live it to the fullest everyday and treat it as your last day on earth?

but then again I thought to myself...

I'm actually really grateful to be born in such a good environment where I don't have anything to worry about except scoring good grades in my exams and making my parents proud. Who am I to judge those that went through hell lots of unfortunate events where we can't even imagine that they are real? A child losing his or her whole family in a car accident over night. A husband that witness his wife's death the day after their wedding. A mother that has to decide which children to for go in an earth quake. All the people that facing natural disasters and crisis. Who am I to guarantee them that everything is going to be okay?

After looking at this picture, I realized that that's one emotion that I never truly experienced before. I'm so lucky that so far I haven lost anyone in my life. Frankly speaking,I really don't know how it feels like to lose someone important to me and I don't want to know either. Look at those puffy eyes, the amount pain she is going through seems unbearable, even her tears looks dry. I know sooner or later, I would have to face the exact pain cause life is life and bad things happens.

To know that one day I'll be in the exact situation as her really saddens me. Nobody should ever be put in her shoes as her hopeless expression says it all. Sometimes, things are out of our control and all we can do is cry and make ourselves feel better.

However, I still believe, everything happens for a reason. If it happens, take it in and learn from it so that it makes us stronger. See life in a positive light and it will shine for you!

Just some late nights thoughts, Good Night! :)

BABY COLOURS

My Favourite Colours

I'm generally a very cheerful and bubbly girl. Being the happy go lucky me, I'm crazy about baby colors.

Baby Pink

I've always wanted to be a princess since I was a little girl. Pink is a really girlish and cute colour. I remember when I was young , all my dresses were pink. I would only wear pink dresses out because I feel the most prettiest and comfortable in them. Hence, pink is the most significant color to me. However, the weird thing about me is that I've grown out of the "wear pink all day" fetish. Today, I adore all pink things except wearing full pink outfits.

My room is now pink but I'll definitely make sure
my future rooms will also be the same.

Pink dresses! Those were the good ol'days :')

The colour of hello kitty explains why I like it so much!Trust me,the people who are close to me will know how big of a fan I'm.

Baby Blue

Blue always represents water and the sky. It makes me feel calm and chill whenever I see the colour. My hobby since young until today has always been swimming. Being in the water, just floating and thinking about nothing is a blessing to me. I could stay all day under the sea or even in a swimming pool and not get bored of it. Even if I get wrinkly everywhere, it's worthwhile. Thus, this colour is also very relatable to me.

Just sitting by the pool is already a privilege to me!

I just really love the silent and freedom you get under water.

If only I could be a mermaid forever...

Baby purple

Purple is the colour of lavender and it is said that it keeps us calm and steady. However, the reason I like purple is no because of how it makes me feel. It's actually because it matches really well with pink. Both of the colours go so well together, either combined or separated. If you actually know me well, you will find most of my properties and things owned is all pink and purple.

Purple and Pink just go so well together.

Even Mother earth and Nature agrees with me.

It is really obvious that all the baby colours I love are sort of related to my childhood and my passion. I guess as a psychology student, I would believe that it's just my unconscious mind doing wonders!

I've always dream of my perfect wedding and how I would want my gown to be. If only it could be something like this and I can live the rest my life surrounded by baby colours.....

I would be the happiest girl alive
